Plastic waste posing threat to wildlife in Idukki
Cheruthoni: The practice of dumping garbage inside Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary by the authorities is posing great threat for the wildlife.
Tonnes of waste collected from Idukki Collectorate and the surrounding area coming under Vazhathope panchayat limits are being dumped inside the sanctuary.
It is quite shocking to note that the number of animals arriving at the disposal spot to consume the plastic and food is going up.
Forest officials say the number of animals falling prey to digestive disorders generated by consumption of plastic are also on the rise.
Neither the panchayat nor the Collectorate have waste processing units. Since the garbage cannot be discarded at human inhabited areas, it is taken to forest, say officials.
The harsh summer and shortage of fodder are driving animals such as monkey, sambar deer, barking deer elephant and wild boar in large numbers to the garbage dumping site.
Though the forest officials represented the issue to authorities concerned on several occasions, nothing has moved yet.
Given the involvement of higher officials, the forest officials are reluctant to take action.
