Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan justified the killing of Maoists in Attappadi on Wednesday calling it an act of self-defence by the Thunderbolt police. The CM also claimed that it was the Maoists who started the encounter by opening firing at the Thunderbolt police.
Replying to N Shamsuddin MLA’s adjournment motion in the Assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan said that police seized modern weapons including AK 47 from the Maoists. He also stated that Agali police has registered two cases in connection with the incident and that the crime branch will investigate them.
The opposition alleged that what happened in Attappadi was a fake encounter. Calling the shootout one-sided, the opposition said if the Maoists had initiated the attack, as the CM claimed, at least some members of the Thunderbolt force would have sustained some sort of injuries.
There has been criticism against the government’s action from all quarters including the allies of the ruling party. CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran and Binoy Viswam MP also criticised the government over the issue.
