Petition in HC seeking ban on protests during COVID-19 pandemic
Kochi: A petition has been filed in the Kerala High Court seeking to ban protests during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The petitioners said that protests would lead to virus spread and sought the immediate intervention of the HC to curb protests violating the coronavirus protocol.
Even though there are relaxations in restrictions, many areas remain as containment zones. The Chief Minister himself stated that several regions are on the brink of community transmission and that the virus is spreading.
However, political parties do not follow the government protocol while protesting. There have been clashes between protesters and police at many places which increases the chances of the virus spreading further. Hence, protests violating COVID-19 protocol must be banned, the petitioner demanded.
The petition also sought to withdraw the approval of political parties that conduct protests violating the COVID-19 protocol.
The writ petition was filed by John Jonier, Dr. Praveen Pai and CI Sajeev E Nair. The petition will be considered by a bench headed by the chief justice on Tuesday.
