Kochi: Leader of Opposition VD Satheesan on Saturday remarked that people should not bear the brunt for the lapses of authorities concerned. He was referring to the National Green Tribunal (NGT)’s direction seeking the Kochi Municipal Corporation to pay an environmental compensation of Rs 100 crore for the damage to the environment because of its failure to handle solid waste.
According to Satheesan, compensation should be levied from entities, officials and authorities concerned whose acts led to the Brahmapuram fire. “It should not be paid from the tax paid by citizens,” he pointed out.
Satheesan attributed the compensation to a backlash for the CPM-led Kochi Municipal Corporation and the state government. He also took the opportunity to target CPM over its alleged witch-hunt against MLA KK Rema. He added that he will protect Rema like his own sister.
