Peerumedu custodial death: Special team headed by SP to probe case
Thiruvananthapuram: A special investigation team of Crime Branch will probe into the Peerumedu custodial death. A seven-member team headed by Kottayam Crime Branch SP K. M. Sabu Mathew will investigate the case. Idukki Crime Branch DySP Johnson Joseph will be the chief investigating officer. The probe will be under control of Crime Branch Ernakulam Range IG.
Many police officers refused to take up the investigation as police officers were involved in the case. Finally, Kottayam SP, who is also in-charge of Idukki, was handed over the responsibility. Apart from SP, seven officers from Ernakulam, Idukki and Kottayam districts will be part of the investigating team.
IG arrived directly to supervise the investigation as police officers were reluctant to investigate. He visited the house of Rajkumar, who died in police custody. Later, evidence will be collected at sub jail and the hospital where Rajkumar was first admitted.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in the assembly on Thursday that Rajkumar, the accused in remand, died under suspicious circumstances and a special team will probe into it.
Following this, DGP Loknath Behera directed Crime Branch ADGP to form a special team for investigation. He also made it clear that the guilty will not be protected and the lapses from the part of police will be examined.
