Kottayam: Police have intensified the investigation on Payippad incident where migrant labourers violated the lockdown to protest. Following the incident, police searched the camps and interrogated many workers at night.
The investigation will be headed by Ernakulam range IG Kaliraj Maheshkumar. They formed groups under three inspectors and reached the labour camps. 20 mobile phones have been confiscated from the camps and they are examining the phone calls and WhatsApp messages these phones received.
Cases were filed against the migrant labourers for violating the lockdown after they staged a protest on Sunday by 11 am.
Police and authorities believe that that such a large number of migrants could not have gathered together in a short time without proper planning. They are also investigating the role of extremists groups behind the protest.
Meanwhile, police are observing the area as there are chances that such protests can take place again.
