Passengers hit as train stops on passing track in Kalamassery
Kochi: There is protest against officials of the Kalamassery railway station for stopping a passenger train on the passing track (track without platform) and making the passengers board and exit the train near the tracks.
The incident took place on Thursday evening. The Ernakulam-Shoranur Passenger (Train No: 56364) reached Kalamassery railway station at 6 pm. In Kalamassery, there are 4 tracks but only track one has a platform. The passenger train came on track two. Passengers struggled to alight and board the train. Many of the elderly boarded the train with the help of fellow passengers.
“A goods train was stationed on track one. Due to a technical problem, the goods train could not be moved. This forced us to direct the passenger train on track two, which does not have a platform,” railway area manager Nithin Robert told mathrubhumi.com.
Officials had announced that the passenger train would come on track two. This prompted the passengers to get down on the tracks. While passengers were standing near track two, the Thiruvananthapuram-Kozhikode Jan Shatabdi Express sped past on track three.
Making passengers board and alight the train from the track was a severe security lapse from the part of the officials. The incident comes at a time when the railways are imposing hefty fines for getting on tracks and crossing the tracks.
