Thalappuzha: The Palchuram ghat road, which had been closed for maintenance, has now been reopened for traffic. Since May 15, the road had been completely shut down to facilitate repair work. Buses resumed service on this route from Wednesday evening.
Starting from Saturday, buses will be plying regularly in both directions. As of Thursday evening, small vehicles like cars and auto taxis were permitted to travel through Palchuram.
The road had sustained significant damage on the climb near Chekuthanthod, resulting in a 130-metre-long pothole. Tarring work was carried out to repair the damaged section. The road repairs were expedited to coincide with the Kottiyoor Vaisakha Mahotsavam. An amount of Rs 85 lakh was allocated for maintenance of Palchuram road.
Palchuram serves as a vital thoroughfare connecting Kannur and Wayanad. With the traffic prohibition lifted, vehicles no longer need to divert via the Nedumpoil route.
The closure of Palchuram road had caused considerable inconvenience to residents of Ambayathode, Kottiyoor, and Kelakam. The alternative route through Periyachuram, which had suffered damage due to last year's heavy rains, posed adventurous challenges to commuters.
