Palakkad: Police here on Monday arrested two people including a woman over charges of murdering an aged woman named Padmavati. The accused are identified as Chittoor natives Sathyabhama and Basheer.
The duo arrived at Padmavati’s house as construction workers. According to police, Basheer and Sathyabhama tried to snatch the chain of the aged woman around Saturday noon. The duo killed Padmavati amid the attempt to steal her chain.
Padmavati (74) was found dead inside her house in Kodumbu on Saturday night. She was staying alone at her house following the death of her husband. Her son and family have been residing at another house close to their ancestral house. It is learnt that her son spotted her dead inside the house when he came to call her for having dinner. She suffered injuries on her neck and her chain of 3 sovereigns was also found missing.
In the preliminary investigation, police assumed that she was murdered during a robbery attempt. The accused had strangled her to death by using a bath towel. Later, they took her chain and managed to flee from the spot.
According to police, the duo conspired to the crime when they reached Padmavati’s house for some construction work. Sathyabhama had visited a jewellery shop and discussed the sale of the chain days before the crime. The court here remanded the two accused in judicial custody.
