Palakkad woman jumps into well to save nephew, receives appreciation from all corners

Koottanad: An exemplary act of courage shown by Aifa Shahina of Palakkad’s Nagalassery is winning praises from all quarters.The woman jumped into a well to save her one-year-old nephew who accidentally fell into it.

Aifa's nephew Muhammad Hizam accidentally fell into the well while playing near its premises. His grandfather and grandmother rushed to the spot on hearing the sound, but they were helpless. Hence, they started crying and alerted people around to save the child from drowning. Aifa who was inside the house heard this voice and rushed to the spot.

Without any second thought, she jumped into the treacherous 18-pole deep well. She was able to catch hold of the child's hands inside the well. By then people in the locality rushed to help the family.

Abbar and Ameed, the neighbour climbed down the well to assist Aifa in the rescue mission. Later, Chalissery police and fire and rescue personnel joined the rescue operation and lifted the child and others from the well.

Aifa Shahina suffered minor injuries from jumping into the well. Currently, she is taking rest at home. When the media reported Aifa's courageous act, many politicians including Speaker MB Rajesh called up and appreciated her. Representatives from various socio-cultural clubs, members of organizations for youth, activists, friends, family in scores are lauding her act. She has also received appreciation from netizens.
