Palakkad Maoist encounter: Only Manivasakam’s body identified by relatives

Udayan, who came to Thrissur medical college hospital from Karnataka suspecting Rema to be his sister, returned after saying that the deceased was not his relative

Thrissur: One week after four Maoists were killed by a thunderbolt team during an encounter in Palakkad, only Manivasakam’s body has been identified by the relatives.

Maoists identified by police as Manivasakam, Rema, Karthi and Aravind were killed in an encounter inside Manjakkandi forests on October 28.

Udayan, who came to Thrissur medical college hospital from Karnataka suspecting Rema to be his sister, returned after saying that the deceased was not his relative.

Meanwhile, two persons came forward claiming Karthi to be their brother. The first, Murukesan from Tamil Nadu, said he would come back with his mother to identify the body. However, the officials have not heard from him since.

The second, Manjunath from Karnataka claimed that deceased Karthi was in fact his brother Suresh. The police are now planning to conduct scientific procedures including DNA tests for more clarity in the matter.

If the police are unable to identify the relatives of the deceased, the officials will be able to bury the bodies after getting permission from the court.
