Pala bypoll: UDF in crisis after Nisha Jose K Mani’s name suggested
Kottayam: The discussions to decide the UDF candidate in Pala assembly constituency for the upcoming bypoll is in a crisis after the name of Nisha Jose K. Mani surfaced recently. The UDF is confused over whether the candidate should be from the Mani family itself. Both Congress and P. J. Joseph faction of Kerala Congress (M) are of the opinion that a person of social acceptance should be fielded in the seat.
Jose K. Mani will hold discussion with the steering committee members to form opinion regarding the candidate. The youth-women wings of the Mani faction suggested the name of Nisha Jose K. Mani. They want a person from the Mani family to be the next MLA in order to continue the development projects initiated by K. M. Mani.
However, Congress wants a candidate who has very high chance of victory. Though Jose K. Mani’s name was suggested, the UDF is not interested to field him in the bypoll. Jose K. Mani became Rajya Sabha MP after resigning as Lok Sabha MP. If he wins from Pala seat, he will have to resign as Rajya Sabha MP. But UDF cannot win the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in the present condition.
Fielding Nisha Jose K. Mani is also likely to start controversies related to nepotism. When Jose K. Mani was fielded in 2004 from Muvattupuzha, the anti-Mani faction joined hands to defeat him. The same threat exists here also, especially in the absence of K. M. Mani. During the last assembly polls, K. M. Mani had entrusted Nisha with the responsibility of his campaign. This was considered as a training before entering to politics.
Meanwhile, P. J. Joseph faction demanded that candidate should be decided after discussing with them. P. J. Joseph also said that the party symbol will be given to only a candidate who has winning chance.
