Thiruvananthapuram: More than 5000 government employees including college teachers will retire from service on Friday. The employees who turn 56 years are retiring from service. According to the preliminary reports, the government requires a total of Rs 1600 crore for providing retirement benefits.
Recently, the finance department had ordered that the retirement benefits should be provided within one month. In case of any delay, the concerned officers will be found guilty and action taken.
The government will have to give the interest of the benefits that was delayed which may cause a huge loss. This is why the government decided to distribute the benefits within one month in order to avoid giving interest.
It is learnt that the number of retirees are higher than that of the previous years. According to the database of SPARK (Service and Payroll Administrative Repository for Kerala), there are more than 5000 employees who turn 56 by May 31. There are no school teachers among the retirees as their retirement date is March 31.
The government appointments were mostly made by the middle of 1980s. Those who entered the service in those years are due for retirement this year, which could be the reason for the mass retirement this time.
When no system of birth registration existed, there was a custom of recording the date of birth as May 31 in schools. Due to this trend, the date of birth of many persons is similar in the official documents. This is the major reason for the mass retirement every May 31.
