Kollam: More than 2,000 school teachers, who have received appointment letters one year ago, are still ‘unemployed’.

This includes those who received appointment letters for the position of teacher in Lower Primary to Higher Secondary schools. However, shortage of teachers is reported in many schools as the vacancies left by the retired teachers have not been filled.

These teachers started receiving appointment letters for the positions of LP school assistant, UP school assistant, high school teacher and higher secondary school teacher from January 2020. Their names have been included in the list of people who received employment as part of the government’s 100-day action plan. Their appointments have been delayed after being entangled in the regulations of Kerala Education Rules.

As per Kerala Education Rules, appointments for the position of teacher are made only when the school reopens. However, the schools are yet to reopen due to the pandemic and as a result the appointments are delayed.

Although classes have resumed for Class 10, 12 students, it is still ‘vacation time’ for them as per official records. The officials concerned stated that only the doubts of the students are being cleared currently. A new rank list is issued for the position of school teacher once in 8 years.

The teachers who are yet to be appointed even after receiving appointment letters have formed a collective called All Kerala Advice Memo Teachers Association. Most of the members in this collective are working as temporary teachers.

Authorities from the educational department stated that the job is assured for all those who received the appointment letter.
