Alappuzha: As the controversy over Malayalam play ‘Kakkukali’ flared up and Kerala Catholic’s Bishop Council (KCBC) made a comparison of the play with the movie ‘The Kerala Story’, Paravoor Public library in Punnapra here has temporarily halted the staging of the play.
The director of the play Job Madhathil has shared a Facebook post, expressing his strong dissent against the organisers ‘unilateral move’ to cease the staging without consulting with the actors or any other crew members of the play.
Alappuzha-based Neythal Nataka Sangham under the Paravoor Public library was the organiser of the play. During a press conference, the new administration committee under Dr S Ajayakumar demanded to stop staging the play without seeking the opinion of those who are directly involved with the play, accused Job Madhathil. He alleged that the administrative committee’s unholy nexus with political organisations annihilates the soul of secular Kerala achieved through the struggles of the renaissance leaders.
‘Kakkukali’ which portrays a young nun and the challenges she comes across in a convent had irked KCBC, which demanded a ban of the play, claiming that it “insulted the self respect of nuns”. Though KCBC started to raise protests against the play in early March, their demands could not achieve any political reverberance and the play continued to be staged.
Later, Christian bodies accused CPM and Congress of maintaining silence at the same time they resorted to demand for the ban of the movie ‘The Kerala Story’. Meanwhile, BJP state president K Surendran slammed CPM for advocating ‘selective secularism’ and ‘selective freedom of expression’.
