Thiruvananthapuram: Minister R Bindu said that Governor Arif Mohammed Khan should sign the ordinance seeking his removal as chancellor of universities as per the constitutional norms. She added that Governor should not see the ordinance as a personal attack against anyone.
"As per the constitutional norms, he is obliged to sign the ordinance," she said. She opined that Khan should consider the ordinance with an open mind without viewing it as a move against him.
Earlier today, the government forwarded the ordinance to Raj Bhavan for the governor's approval.
Khan said he would forward the ordinance to the president if it only targets his powers. If the ordinance is forwarded for the president’s assent, a decision on it will be delayed. If such a situation emerges, the government will not be able to bring a bill when an ordinance is before the president.
The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to bring in an ordinance to remove Governor Arif Mohammad Khan from the post of Chancellor.
The cabinet plans to replace the governor from the chancellor post by appointing an academic expert. The decision came after Governor Arif Mohammad Khan sought the resignations of vice-chancellors of all nine universities in the state.
