Opposition to use Alan-Thaha UAPA case as political weapon against govt and CPM
Kozhikode: The opposition party is prepared to use the NIA court’s decision to grant bail to the accused of Panthirankavu UAPA case, Alan Shuhaib and Thaha Fasal as a political weapon against the government. The local leadership of CPM was against the party’s decision on the issue. However, they finally had to change their stance owing to the pressure from the Chief Minister.
The press conference held by KPCC Vice President T Siddique to voice their protest against the issue is a clear example that the opposition wants to use Alan-Thaha issue as a political weapon. T Siddique had asked why the Chief Minister labeled them as Maoists when even the party’s district committee did not agree to it. Leaders like MA Baby had clarified in the beginning that it was not the policy of CPM to charge students with the UAPA act.
The NIA court granted bail to students by stating that the prosecution could not submit any evidence. A case was filed against them as per UAPA Section 20 alleging that both Alan and Thaha were Maoists. However, the investigating officers presented a charge sheet without this section in court. When they were arrested, political leaders including Ramesh Chennithala had visited their houses. The opposition has demanded that Pinarayi Vijayan should apologise to both the families for labelling the students as Maoists.
