Kozhikode: Minister of Revenue K Rajan urged the public not to panic over the opening of dams. Water will be released only according to the rules in a phased manner, said the minister. He also rubbished the rumours claiming that the opening of dams will result in floods.
He said that Tamil Nadu had informed about the opening of spillway shutters in Mullaperiyar at 7 pm on the previous day. Meanwhile, Kerala demanded Tamil Nadu to draw maximum water from the dam and also not to open the shutters during the night. It has been also reminded to inform the decision of opening the shutters as soon as possible, said Rajan.
In the first phase, 534 cusecs of water are being released from Mullaperiyar dam. After 2 hours, the authorities may release 1000 cusecs of water. Tamil Nadu has assured that water over 1000 cusecs will be let out only after discussing with Kerala.
Minister Rajan ensured that the flood situation that happened in Kerala in 2018 will never repeat this time. He urged the public to be cautious and warned that cases will be registered against those who circulate fake news on social media regarding the current situation.
