Oommen Chandy likely to contest LS polls
Thiruvananthapuram: Former chief minister and senior congress leader Oommen Chandy is facing pressure from the party to contest in the Lok Sabha polls. Responding to the rumours, Oommen Chandy stated that if high command asks him to contest in the polls, he will think on it. But he refused to confirm the reports.
Though earlier he asserted that present MLAs should not contest in the polls, he has changed his stand.
Meanwhile, KPCC president Mullappally Ramchandran stated that the party has not taken a decision to field Oommen Chandy in the polls. At the same time, he expressed his interest to field Oommen Chandy as candidate of the party.
“Oommen Chandy is the best candidate for Congress who can contest at any constituency in any election. There is no doubt that he will win the election with huge majority,” said Mullappally.
AICC general secretary Mukul Vasnik who is in charge of Kerala also hinted that Oommen Chandy may contest the polls.
He stated that a decision on candidates will be taken after holding discussion with the committees including DCC and local committees. A final decision will be taken by the central election committee, he added.
The senior leaders of the party hinted that Oommen Chandy will contest the elections after national leadership asked to field senior leaders. The leadership assumed that Oommen Chandy’s presence as a candidate will motivate those who favour Congress in all constituencies.
