Chennai: With Onam almost 3 months away, tickets for major trains from Chennai to Kerala during the festive season are already sold out. There are no sleeper class tickets available in Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram mail (12326), Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram express (12695), Chennai-Mangalore mail (12601), and Chennai-Alleppey express (22639).
While ‘Thiruvonam’ falls on August 29 this year, a huge crowd comprising college students and workers from Chennai are expected to board their trains home on August 25, Friday evening.
There are no sleeper tickets available with assured berths in the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram mail on August 25 and 26. The ‘RAC’ reservations for these days are piling up.
There are no tickets available in the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram express on Saturday, August 26. The train is expected to be filled with people leaving for Kerala after the office hours on the weekend. Those who could not book their tickets in the previous day trains are also expected to board the train.
There are no sleeper class or third ac tickets available in the Chennai-Alleppey express and the Mangalore mail (headed towards Malabar). However tickets are available in plenty in all the classes in Chennai-Mangalore express (12685).
Looking at the current situation, travel from Chennai to Kerala during the Onam season will turn out to be a hectic journey for train passengers. The bus operators might take advantage of the situation and hike the ticket prices considerably. There is a rising demand for special trains for the occasion.
