Dr Gopinath and wife Indira
Thrissur: “Doctor, you handled my mother’s delivery,” this is how some of Dr Gopinath’s patients introduce themselves to him. The 80-years-old doctor has been practising medicine for 50 years now. He used to practice in Kanjany and neighbouring areas for many years. He now lives in Thrissur city and still travels around 15 kilometres daily to look after his patients.
He leaves at 6.30 am and first goes to his clinic near the Kanjany bus stand. His consultation time is till 1 pm. He takes whatever the patients give him as his consultation fee.
The clinic remains closed only on Sundays, and special days like Onam, Vishu, and Good Friday. The clinic was functional even during the Covid pandemic and was closed only for a week.
It was in 1971, Dr Gopinath reached Kanjany after joining in Mariyapuram Brothers Hospital.
"During that days, patients availed service of a doctor for a month after purchasing a card at Rs 1.5. General practitioners handled all cases including pregnancies and labour," recollected Dr Gopinath.
He had worked as the RMO at Thrissur Co-operative Hospital before joining the hospital at Kanjany. He also worked as a tutor at the medical college.
He moved to Thrissur 15 years back to facilitate his wife Indira Gopinath’s social work. She has been working actively in the Pain and Palliative Society for 15 years now.
Dr Gopinath is as fit as a fiddle even at the age of 80. He follows a strict daily routine. He wakes up and exercises from 3.30 am to 6 am regularly.
