Omicron variant of Covid: Kerala put on alert, says Minister Veena George

Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George said that everyone must be cautious of Omicron, the new variant of Covid. The minister also said that the state has received an alert from the Center regarding the South African variant.

"Security will be beefed up in all airports. The state has taken all necessary measures as per the instructions issued by the Center. Those coming from foreign countries are required to take the RT-PCR test 48 hours prior to the travel. The test must also be taken after reaching the state," the minister said.

The minister made it clear that proper quarantine just like the current procedure directed by the Centre must be followed in the case of the new Covid variant.

WHO is studying the new variant and its capability to resist vaccines. The minister also emphasized the importance of wearing masks, maintaining social distance and using sanitisers.
