Kottayam: Due to increase in the number of covid-19 cases, the authorities have informed that only emergency surgeries will be performed at the Kottayam medical college. The decision came in the backdrop of several doctors and staff in the medical college testing positive for the virus. It is learned that non-emergency surgeries have been cancelled in all categories, including those cases which were pre-scheduled.

Meanwhile, people are barred from visiting patients undergoing treatment at medical college. Further, only a single person would be permitted as bystander to a patient. If more than one person is required, permission of the concerned doctor is mandatory. Crowds are not allowed on hospital premises and restrictions will be put in place to avoid crowding in OPs.

Vehicles which transport patients to the hospital should leave the compound immediately. Further, authorities have requested people having mild symptoms to visit hospitals in their own locality. Hospitals are also requested not to refer patients to medical college unless the case is of utmost importance.
