Officials inspecting fish
Thrissur: In a surprise raid conducted at Thrissur Sakthan Market as a part of Operation Sagar Rani, the officials have seized 7.5 kgs of sardines that are supposedly perished. The raid was conducted on Tuesday at 5:00 AM. The officials from departments of fisheries, food safety and health were involved in the raid. It has been decided that surprise raids will be conducted once every month.
The raid prolonged for hours. Five samples collected from the stalls have been sent for laboratory tests and further procedures will be taken based on the results.
According to the food safety officer of Thrissur circle, Dr Rekha Mohan, the sardines seized were rotting and the gut region was lacerated.
The authorities have received a complaint that a cat fell ill after consuming fish bought from the market. The officials say that fish is being preserved without ice.
