Kollam: Even before the missing of over 100 tax evasion case files from Punalur GST office, officials had hoarded receipt books and related files of GST, despite the AG audit team’s demand.

The AG team conducted the audit at the GST intelligence headquarters in Kollam just before the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020. The team demanded receipt books and files for a year from April 2018.

A total of 15 receipt books of the surveillance squad alone was to be produced before the team. But the official produced only three receipt books and related files that had no major issues.

Even in these books, auditors found that the amount collected as fines and taxes was deposited into the government accounts very late.

A notice was issued asking officials to produce the remaining receipt books and files. But they replied saying the files were at Punalur and would be produced within two days. However, the state went into lockdown the next day and so the files were not produced.
