Nun abuse case: Probe team records priests' statements in Jalandhar
Jalandhar: In the case relating to the alleged sexual abuse of a nun by Jalandhar Bishop Franco MulakkaI, the probe team recorded statements of four priests in Jalandhar. It is reported that the priests in their statement supported the nun’s complaint.
“We know that the nun faced some problems from the bishop,” said the priests in their statement.
The probe team is likely to interrogate bishop Franco Mulakkal on Saturday afternoon. It is learned that they will visit the bishop at bishop house or summon him to the Punjab Armed Police headquarters.
The team will collect evidence from Missionaries of Jesus headquarters at Jalandhar cantonment.
The investigation team reached Jalandhar for further interrogation one-and-a-half months after the nun raised rape charges against the bishop. A six-member team led by Vaikkom DYSP K Subhash will visit Jalandhar commissioner PK Sinha.
Meanwhile, believers rushed to the diocese headquarters after rumours spread that the bishop would be arrested. Armed police force under DCP Gurmeet Singh reached the place to evaluate the situation as more people starting arriving.
Punjab Police have declared that they would not allow violation of law and order.
Deputy Commissioner Gurmeet Singh told Mathrubhumi News that safe accommodation has been provided to the police officials from Kerala.
The probe team has decided to collect evidence from the convent run by Missionaries of Jesus in Jalandhar cantonment, where the nun who is the complainant, was an inmate.
It is learned that the bishop will be interrogated after the investigation team records the statement of senior priests.
“Bishop Franco Mulakkal will cooperate with the probe team,” said Jalandhar diocese PRO Fr Peter Kavumburam.
