Not projecting Sabarimala issue in election affected results: CPM state committee
Thiruvananthapuram: Criticism was raised at the CPM state committee conducted here that not emphasising Sabarimala issue and renaissance values adversely affected CPM in the Lok Sabha polls. Party’s silence negatively influenced the results. Committee also heard criticisms like the party hid itself from Sabarimala issue.
After Supreme Court pronounced the verdict favourable to women entry in Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple on September 28, 2018, CPM took a stance in support of the verdict considering it a matter of gender equality. CPM had the same stance earlier, but the party strengthened its opinion after the verdict. It also campaigned the issue highlighting it as protection of renaissance values. However, the party and the Front hesitated to turn it as an election propaganda.
When UDF and BJP used it for heated discussions during election campaigns, LDF kept silence on the matter. With this, the Front, party and the government were criticised for hiding themselves from the matter. Those who participated in the committee pointed out that it obstructively affected the LS poll results.
Besides that, avoiding the issue during election campaign continued to support the misunderstandings created by BJP and UDF over the issue, the committee evaluated.
