Not all patient deaths are due to Covid; govt not hiding any info, says Health Minister
Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister K K Shailaja on Tuesday said that the death of Covid patients in the state can’t always be attributed to the virus infection. The state government confirms Covid deaths as per the international guidelines issued.
Covid deaths are confirmed after detailed examination and medical reports by expert committee. The same are confirmed in Kerala as per WHO approved International Guidelines for Certification and Classification (Coding) of Covid-19 as Cause of Death under International Statistical Classification of Diseases, she added.
In case of patients’ deaths or if brought dead to hospital or if the doctor suspects Covid death, either TrueNat test or Genexpert test will be conducted. Sometimes TrueNat test shows positive result in case of critically ill patient. Even then, this can’t be confirmed as Covid death. Once the result is positive, last rites will be performed as per Covid protocol. Also, sample from the body will be send to NIV Alappuzha for further confirmation.
The results from NIV lab and the medical report from the hospital will be evaluated and the death will be confirmed as Covid death or not, she added.
Official announcement of Covid deaths are made as per this criteria. The allegation that government is hiding information relating to Covid deaths is completely false, she further stated.
