No such thing as peaceful hartal, observes HC
Kochi: The High Court on Wednesday observed that there was no such thing as a peaceful hartal. Regarding flash hatals, the HC said that no matter what the provocation was, the people should not take law into their hands.
Youth Congress state president Dean Kuriakose agreed to calling for a hartal. The HC said that parties including Dean need not present themselves before it on the matter again.
Dean Kuriakose along with UDF leaders from Kasaragod M C Kamarudheen and K Govindhan Nair had submitted affidavits in connection with the contempt of court case. The trio had submitted affidavits separately.
In the affidavit, Dean agreed to have called for a hartal. Adding that he had called for a peaceful hartal, Dean said he was unaware of the court order banning flash hartal at that time.
However, the other UDF leaders argued that they had no connection with the matter. The HC rejected both arguments. HC stated that the important matter was not if the trio had called for, but if they had led the hartal.
A detailed hearing in the case will be held on March 18. The HC has allowed the state government to submit a counter affidavit.
