Parcel office at Koyilandy railway station.
Koyilandy: Parcel services in 10 railway stations under Southern railways have been called off. The services at Arakkonam, Pattambi, Kuttippuram, Koyilandy, Vadakara, Mahe, Kannapuran, Cheruvathur, Payyanur, and Kanhangad have been called off by the principal chief commercial manager. The decision comes into effect from May 24.
Loading and unloading of goods (parcels) are prohibited in these stations. The information has been passed on to other railway stations in the country as well.
From now on, parcel services will be allowed only in stations where the trains halt for more than 5 minutes. The decision comes as a major blow for the porters in these stations.
For example, there are 2 porters in the Koyilandy railway station, including a lady porter. Their livelihood is at stake now. Fishing equipment, including nets, for the harbour are mostly sent to Koyilandy via trains from Mangalore and Nagarcoil. Now these equipment will be dropped at Kozhikode railway station.
The decision will lead to major loss for the fishing sector. Other items that used to reach Koyilandy station via parcels include prawn powder, clothes, and milk products.
