No action taken against luxury buses plying within Kerala; KSRTC suffers Rs 20 cr loss
Thiruvananthapuram: It has been found that about 400 long distance private buses are plying within the state besides the long distance buses of KSRTC violating all rules. The luxury private buses that conduct services within the state in the same model of interstate buses cause a loss of about Rs 20 crore to the KSRTC. The complaints filed by KSRTC along with evidences in this regard to the Motor Vehicle Department remain unresolved.
There are illegal private bus services to Thiruvananthapuram from all major cities. They are plying on the nationalised routes monopolised by the KSRTC. According to the permit conditions, private buses are not allowed to ply more than 5 km distance on nationalised routes.
Despite this condition, private buses sell tickets through booking offices and via online and also conduct service as stage carriage on nationalised routes, as noted in the complaints filed by KSRTC.
The major hindrance for banning the interstate private buses is the difficulty to provide any alternate transportation facilities. On the other hand, KSRTC conducts sufficient number of long distance services within the state.
According to the Fleet Owner rules, only KSRTC is allowed to run long distance buses within the state as they are the major source of income for the corporation. When the parallel bus services was started, KSRTC suffered a huge loss.
The passengers are taken in contract carriage buses pretending it to be a tour package. The passengers are picked and dropped at various stops on the route. KSRTC officials have filed separate complaints mentioning every illegal bus service and the details of the booking websites. Even the method of booking ticket is proof for the violation of law but the Motor Vehicle Department has not taken any action yet.
Many private contract carriage buses conduct daily services to Kozhikode, Kannur, Payyannur, Kalpetta, Pattambi, Sultan Bathery, Munnar, Pala and Kattappana from major cities. In the same way, illegal services are conducted from the cities in the state to Thiruvananthapuram.
