Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Sunday said that the state now has a mechanism equipped to do Nipah testing in a time-bound manner.

The minister noted that the Institute of Advanced Virology (IAV), Thiruvananthapuram; Microbiology Centre, Kozhikode; and the National Institute of Virology, Alappuzha—are equipped to do Nipah testing. “We have Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, and also NIV - ICMR-National Institute of Virology, Pune’s mobile lab has reached Kozhikode. As a result, Nipah tests can be done swiftly," she said.

She also elaborated on the Nipah testing regulations. ”The test conducted to identify the Nipah virus is a complicated one. As it is a dangerous virus, the testing can be only done at ICMR-authorised laboratories. The testing is done by PCR or RT-PCR test,” she added.

Meanwhile, a media release issued by the health department has detailed procedures related to sample collection, sending of samples, and the confirmation process.
