Nileshwaram: The Nileshwar Municipality has bought equipment worth Rs 10 lakh for an auditorium that has not been constructed yet. According to the audit report of 2021-22, the furniture bought for the auditorium is piled up inside a room and is being destroyed.

The audit report underlined the fact that the municipality’s “farsighted” equipment purchase for the yet-to-be-constructed auditorium at CHMKS Vocational Higher Secondary School in Kottapuram, was an unnecessary expense.

The municipality had bought a sound system, 2 tables, 12 cushion chairs, 4 podiums and 132 chairs, said reports. According to principal B Nisha, all the purchased tables and chairs have been kept inside the meeting hall of the school.

The items were purchased from the Kerala Artisans Development Corporation (KADCO) in Kozhikode. The audit report also questioned how a sound system was purchased even as the existing government order specifically mandates the purchase of furniture only. The administration is supposed to give a reply to the audit report.

Meanwhile, municipality secretary K Manoj Kumar maintained that it was the governing body’s decision to purchase the furniture. "The project executive officer has been told to set up the auditorium and arrange all the items,” he added.

The audit report also mentioned the purchase of 24 laptops worth Rs 10,55,544 for a non-existent mathematics lab at the same school.
