NIA takes 5 into custody in Kannur; IS links suspected
Kannur: Five persons have been taken into custody following a raid conducted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials at Kanakamala in Kannur on Sunday. Those in custody are suspected to be associated with the Islamic State (IS).
NIA sources said the raid was carried out following an investigation on the basis of information received from Andhra four months ago.
The NIA team headed by IG Anurag Sajju reached Kannur on Sunday morning and carried out the exercise with the help of local police. While they nabbed five persons, three managed to escape.
Sources indicate that the gang comprises two Keralites, who have moved to Tamil Nadu.
Despite assisting the NIA team, the local police lack proper information about those taken into custody.
The NIA team conducted the search after locating the mobile tower location.
However, NIA sources declined to reveal more details of the operation. They say more information could be disclosed only after a detailed interrogation.
