Neyyattinkara suicide: KSU-YC activists vandalise Canara bank regional office in T’vm
Thiruvananthapuram: The regional office of the Canara Bank in Thiruvananthapuram was vandalised by the KSU and Youth Congress activists on Wednesday morning in connection with the suicide of a mother-daughter duo fearing confiscation.
A huge protest was staged in front of the regional office by the activists including state leaders. The protesters demanded action against the bank officials.
Around 25 activists barged into the office and vandalised the front office attacking security persons. Police intervened and forcefully took them out. Police later arrested and removed them.
Fearing protest, three branches of Canara bank are not functioning on Wednesday. It is known that more protests will be staged by locals and political parties later in the day after the release of the bodies following post-mortem.
Fearing the confiscation of their house, a mother-daughter duo had committed suicide by setting themselves ablaze on Tuesday. Marayimuttam native Chandran's wife Lekha (40) and daughter Vaishnavi (19) had set themselves on fire. Vaishnavi was an undergraduate student.
15 years back, they had taken Rs 5 lakh from the Neyyattinkara Canara bank for house construction. They had repaid Rs 8 lakh until now. A seizure notice was issued to them asking to repay the remaining Rs 4,80,000.
Huge protests were staged on Tuesday here including road blockades.
