Panoor: A newborn baby died immediately after birth here in Kannur on Thursday. Sameera, wife of Haneefa, gave birth prematurely and the family blamed the doctor for the child’s death.
On Thursday morning, Sameera, showed discomfort and the family members rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) nearby and urged the doctor to come to their house.
However, the doctor and nurse refused to visit Sameera citing COVID-19 protocol. Following this, the family sought the help of police but the doctor refused to cooperate.
Meanwhile, Sameera gave birth and the child died. The family alleged that the baby died due to the doctor not attending to Sameera. Had the doctor attended to her, the child could have been saved, they said.
Sameera, residing near Panoor police station, was undergoing pregnancy-related treatment at a hospital in Thalassery. The family sought help from the PHC as it was an emergency and they could not take her to the hospital.
On learning about the incident, Health Minister K. K. Shailaja issued an order to transfer the doctor and nurse. Shailaja responded that the incident was sad.
