Thiruvananthapuram: The transmission tower of Akashvani, Thiruvananthapuram, which collapsed due to strong winds the other day, will be replaced within a week. A container from Chennai carrying equipment for installing the new tower will arrive on Sunday. The tower will be installed with help from an expert team.
As a result of the destruction of the tower, broadcast was halted in and around Thiruvananthapuram. Local news was broadcast through Ananthapuri FM, said authorities. The tower in Manvila collapsed due to wind on Friday. It broke into three pieces. As it will take at least three months to restore the tower, the engineering wing has decided to install a modern tower.
The transmission tower was installed at Manvila, Sreekaryam, 50 years ago. The engineering wing had reported to higher authorities years ago that the transmission should be conducted through Ananthapuri FM after replacing the old tower. But the higher authorities were not keen on replacing the tower, according to staff.
