Kottayam: Jose K Mani has called a meeting of Kerala Congress on Sunday indicating that the party could be moving towards a split.
Stating that the meeting was being called after the written support of one fourth of the leaders, Jose K Mani clarified that the new party chairman will be announced on Sunday.
The phenomenal majority that Jose K Mani group enjoys in Kerala Congress state committee has prompted Jose K Mani into making such a move. Jose K Mani group claimed that they have the support of around 300/400 permanent members of the party. The support of one fourth of the members is required to call a state committee meeting.
Responding to media, Jose K Mani said, “The support of 115 members is required for calling a state committee meeting. Despite submitting a letter signed by 127 members, P J Joseph was not ready to call a state committee meeting. In this situation I decided to call the meeting.”
The primary agenda of the meeting is to elect the new party chairman. The Joseph group has also been invited to the meeting.
“As the meeting is being called with the support of majority of members, the move cannot be termed as rebel movement,” clarified Jose K Mani. It is learned that Jose K Mani made the move following legal advice that such an action would not result in Kerala Congress losing its name or symbol.
Now all eyes are on P J Joseph to see how he reacts to the development.
