Perinthalmanna: Kerala Minister for Cultural Affairs Saji Cheiryan said that active protest was necessary to sustain progressive movements in the country and added that neither Communists nor Congressmen, rather religion’s candidates win elections in the state. The minister made the remarks while inaugurating a hall built in memory of cultural activist and writer Palakkeezh Narayanan in Perinthalmanna the other day.
“Huge caste discrimination is taking place in Kerala. A recent data of the representatives of municipalities in Kerala revealed that Muslim candidates had won (elections) in Muslim populated regions and similarly Hindus in regions where Hindus were a majority. It needs to be noted that Communists and Congressmen have not won,” Cheriyan said.
“Making progressive statements thinking everything is safe will not resolve these issues. Nobody is able to speak even a word in Kerala owing to caste discrimination. However, one should say what they wish without fear. There has not been any other period in the country where one had to live with this much fear. We all should try to spread progressive ideas. I believe that none of us are doing anything significant right now,” he added.
