Nehru Trophy boat race to take place today
Alappuzha: The 66th Nehru Trophy boat race will take place today at Punnamada backwaters in Alappuzha on Saturday. It is usually scheduled every second Saturday in the month of August, but this year it was postponed due to the devastating floods.
There are 81 boats participating in the race this year. It would be the highest number of participants till date.
In the snake boat (Chundan Vallam) category, 20 boats are participating in the race events while 5 will be attending the exhibition race. The race of small boats will start at 11 am.
The Kerala Blasters football team and Tollywood actor Allu Arjun will be arriving to watch the event The event will be inaugurated by governor P Sathasivam. Union minister Alphons Kannanthanam will be the chief guest. Ministers TM Thomas Isaac, G Sudhakaran will also attend the event.
Special seating has been arranged for women and children to safely watch the race. Bio-toilets and special restrooms for women are also setup.
The traffic in Alappuzha town will be regulated from 9 am on Saturday following the Nehru Trophy boat race. Parking has been restricted on roads in the town from 6 am. Fine will be levied on unduly parked vehicles and such vehicles will be removed using recovery vehicle.
The traffic will be restricted from 7 am to 7 pm through district court north junction towards east to Thathampally Kayal – Kurissadi junction. Also only KSRTC buses are allowed to commute between the control room and east fire force office routes.
The vehicles coming through Alappuzha Thannermukkam road from north to watch the boat race should be parked in the SDV school ground. The vehicles coming from Ernakulam through the national highway should also be parked in the SDV ground by entering through the Kommady road. While the parking space is arranged on Carmel and St Anthony’s school ground for the vehicles coming from Changanassery through Kaithavana road.
The heavy containers are not allowed to pass the town from 9 am to 8 pm. The heavy container vehicles coming from south should be parked on Kalarkode bypass and those from north should be parked on Kommady bypass.
