Kozhikode: The train services stopped due to Covid-19 induced restrictions are getting resumed, but it seems there is no end to the exasperation faced by the commuters in the Malabar region of the state.
15 services, including passenger trains under Palakkad division of Indian Railways, have not yet resumed the operations.
Passenger trains running in the routes Thrissur-Kozhikode, Kozhikode-Shoranur, Kannur-Shoranur, Thrissur-Kannur, four trains to Nilambur remain non-operational.
The three MEMU trains, which used to run from Palakkad Town to Shoranur, Erode and Coimbatore too have not yet resumed. It may be noted that the Malabar region is facing a such a plight when train services in the Travancore region have resumed after Covid-19 break.
As there are no trains in the day, daily commuters are having a tough time. Shelving of general compartments (unreserved coaches) in long-distance trains add to their misery. The commuters in Nilambur-Shoranur route have to wait for hours to get a train.
The timings of the trains are also not convenient for the majority. Dr Biju Nainan, member of commuters’ advisory committee in Palakkad, alleged that though the division is urging authorities concerned in Southern Railways regarding timings, they never listen to it. He added that the precedent of extending the service of trains allocated for Palakkad division to Coimbatore and Nagercoil badly impacts commuters in Malabar region.
Amid this, Southern Railways have informed that they will soon resume the operations of trains 56000/56001: Kozhikodeֱ↔Shoranur, 56663/56664: Kozhikodeֱ↔Thrissur and 56602/56603: Thrissurֱ↔Kannur.
