Nedumkandam custodial death: Investigation report points flaws by magistrate
Kochi: Investigation report in the Nedumkandam custodial death has stated that Idukki magistrate made lapses in the case. The defects were highlighted in the report prepared by Thodupuzha chief judicial magistrate (CJM).
CJM found that Idukki magistrate Rashmi Raveendran had not done what is legally required in Rajkumar custodial death case. Police had produced Rajkumar before the magistrate after keeping him in custody for more than 24 hours after his arrest. But, magistrate didn’t seek an explanation on this from police.
Doctors had examined Rajkumar before producing him before the magistrate. But magistrate didn’t check the medical documents in this regard. Magistrate examined Rajkumar in dim light. Though the police vehicle could reach till the magistrate’s house, Rajkumar's examination was done outside. It prevented her to spot the wounds on Rajkumar’s body, said the CJM report.
CJM also pointed out that similar lapses were reported from the part of Rashmi Raveendran earlier also. She had examined an accused in the similar way who was nabbed by the Kaliyar police in May. Flaws in this case was also reported to high court. However, the high court responded on this issue as lack of alertness from the part of magistrate.
