Nedumbassery airport all set to counter flood
Kochi: As heavy rains are forecast across the state, the Cochin International Airport Authority Ltd in Nedumbassery initiated measures to counter flood. CIAL informed that the renovation of canals and drainages in the region close to the airport are being carried out.
Canals including Chengalthode which is close to the airport and other drainages stretching southwards in 15 kilometres are being cleaned under CIAL.
In the last two years, the Kochi airport was closed in August due to floods.
There are many canals which are channels of Periyar river in these regions. When these canals are flooded, the airport, including its runway, will be inundated.
Activities are being carried out to avoid waterlogging in airport and premises. Efforts are on to drain out the water to low lying areas of Periyar river during heavy rains, informed CIAL.
