Thiruvananthapuram: Ten largescale plants to produce natural gas from waste will be set up in the state in association with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL). BPCL will take over the construction of the Brahmapuram plant and construction in other nine districts will either be taken up by BPCL or GAIL.
Pathanamthitta, Kasaragod, Idukki and Wayanad districts have been excluded due to concerns of not getting enough waste to run the plant. The minimum processing capacity is 100 tonnes per day. BPCL says this will be increased to 250 tonnes in the future.
If the existing Kannur and Kozhikode plants continue functioning, new plants will not be introduced there.
As per the agreement, the companies will bear the construction cost while the state government will provide land, water and electricity. The resultant Compressed BioGas (CBG) will be used by the companies. An understanding has been reached with FACT for the sale of compost waste.
Corporations and municipalities will ensure the waste requirement to operate the plant on a daily basis is met. The government will take over the unusable and rejected waste at the plant.
Home Affairs Minister MB Rajesh called the project a big step in the right direction and said it hopes to resolve the waste problem in Kerala to a large extent.
