National Investigation Agency to probe IS recruitment
Thiruvananthapuram: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the incident of Keralites leaving the home state to join the Islamic State.
So far, police have received 21 missing person complaints in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Kerala Police have decided to slap UAPA on 11 persons, who went missing from Kasargod before handing over of the case to NIA. The intelligence wing has found that five of the missing persons have direct association with the IS.
Reports say two of the missing persons went to Kuwait from Bengaluru on June 24.
Meanwhile, a 20-member special police team headed by Kanhangad DySP Sunil Baby has been constituted to carry out investigation about those reported missing from Kasargod.
In Kannur, relatives of an MBA graduate belonging to Chirakkal have filed complaint that he along with his family have gone missing.
Relatives say the youth, his wife and two children have not returned after performing Umrah. The youth has been serving in Saudi Arabia for the last 10 years.
Meanwhile, reports say Firoz, who went missing from Kasargod, has been arrested in Mumbai.
Enquiry extended to government officials
The central intelligence wing is probing whether those having IS links have intruded into various government departments. It is learnt that the agency has received information about persons with extremist mindset joining police force.
Also, a probe into foreigners who arrived in Kerala to learn yoga has been launched.
The officers attached to the central intelligence wing camping in Malabar region have received some vital information, say sources. They are suspicious over a Kozhikode-based gang operating to connect youth with the extremist groups. Also intelligence agencies have received information that certain government officials are assisting them.
Also, the investigation has been extended to departments other than the police and the activities of a few persons are being monitored. In the wake of the new developments, the operation of Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) is also being analysed.
