Thrissur: Shanthamma of Enkakkad here on Monday had a narrow escape from a train accident despite being fainted on the railway track when the train was approaching. The timely intervention of the loco pilot turned crucial and the 76-year-old woman escaped with some minor injuries.
The incident happened on Monday morning when the woman was returning after visiting Uthralikavu temple. She used to cross the railway track to easily reach the temple.
On Monday, she fainted on the track while returning home after visiting the temple. Mangala Express train was passing through the route this time. But the loco pilot Biju Joseph noticed the woman lying on the track. He was able to immediately stop the train because it was at a slow pace due to construction work on the track.
The train’s engine part covered the woman, but tragedy was averted as she was lying in the middle of the track vertically.
On knowing about the matter, onlookers and head-load workers in the nearby gate rushed to the spot and rescued the woman who was under the train.
Later, social activists PR Sureshkumar and Sumesh Arayaparambil along with police officials took her to the district hospital. The woman was in panic when regained her consciousness. She was discharged from the hospital after her family members arrived there.
