Malappuram: As many as 150 cases were registered in Malappuram district under ‘Operation Race’ and ‘Operation Alteration’ launched by the Motor Vehicles Department of Kerala. The inspections commenced only a few days back to keep a check on increasing cases of racing and illegal modifications of vehicles. The officials found that fake number plates are fixed on many vehicles here.
In Malappuram, inspections were carried out by seven squads of officials in the district enforcement control room as per the directions of ADGP S Sreejith. MVD had received information regarding the bike racing conducted following illegal betting among youth.
Bike races were conducted in the district by offering expensive gifts to riders who race from Edappal to Kuttipuram and return within a fixed time. This race was put to an end after a rider died in an accident recently. At least 70 cases were registered under ‘Operation Race’ later.
Another set of 84 cases were registered against illegal alterations, including removing silencers causing loud revving of the bikes.
Cases of drug peddling using motorcycles with fake number plates are also surging here. A rider abandoned his motorcycle and escaped when MVD officials chased him in Veliyancode. When enquired further, the officials came to know that the number plate was fake and the registration number originally belonged to a car. Later, they tracked the owner using the chassis number on the bike and realised that the motorcycle was stolen five years back from Tirur. Officials informed that cases of bike theft for criminal offences by fixing fake number plates and carrying out minor modifications are increasing in the district.
Register in Parivahan
Finding lost vehicles will be easier if the vehicle owners registered their mobile phone number in the Parivahan portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The number has to be uploaded in the option ‘Citizen Service’ on the website. By this, the details of a person’s vehicle will be automatically saved in the portal.
