Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) on Friday penalised a vehicle dealer for tampering with the odometer of new bikes in Perinthalmanna..
The incident came to light after the enforcement unit of MVD inspected two bikes placed for exhibit. The officials found that the cable to the odometer was disabled. The dealer was fined Rs 1,03,000. They were unable to produce trade certificates and other documents.
The new bikes in showrooms are often used for test drives, exhibitions, and other marketing purposes. The dealers remove the odometer to avoid the buyer from learning that vehicle was used before.
Tampering with an odometer is an offence punishable by up to a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Despite these rules, often such incidents were left unreported and are practised in many places.
