MV Shreyams Kumar to contest Rajya Sabha election as LJD candidate
Thiruvananthapuram: Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD) state president MV Shreyams Kumar will contest the Rajya Sabha polls from Kerala. LJD state executive meeting summoned here on Sunday took the decision to field Shreyams Kumar in the upcoming polls. He will file the nomination on August 13 at 11.30 am.
The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of M.P. Veerendrakumar in May.
Earlier, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) had positively reacted to the talks held between the LJD and the CPI(M) leaders in this regard.
The LJD state executive committee meeting also paid homage to people who died in Karipur flight crash and Pettimudy landslide.
Addressing the meeting, MV Shreyams Kumar stated that LJD has requested the Chief Minister to take immediate measures for compensation and rehabilitation of people affected by Pettimudy landslide.
He also pointed out the consequences of implementing Environmental Impact Assessment draft 2020.
“EIA draft notification nullifies many sections mentioned in the Environmental Protection Act, 1986. The notification brought in times of COVID-19 pandemic will trigger serious impact on the environment. The draft removes restrictions in over 70 sectors. Pure air, water and land for agriculture are the basic rights of human beings. The Environmental Protection Act gives the opportunity to complain against who hinder these basic rights. Meanwhile, EIA draft notification will put an end to such opportunities. With this new draft notification, industries which cause environmental pollution will be allowed to function without any restrictions. It will create serious problems in nature,” said Shreyams Kumar.
“At a time when people are concerned about the pandemic, notifications like EIA draft will shatter normal lives. A development which adversely affect normal life of people should not be encouraged. Hence, LJD has decided to organize protests and public awareness programmes against EIA,” he added.
The LJD leader also sought the central government’s attention to the crisis faced by farmers in the country.
Shreyams Kumar also condemned the attacks on state government in connection with the gold smuggling case.
“Even Chief Minister is being attacked over the gold smuggling case and other issues. These attacks, launched with vested political interests realising there is no other way they can make gains in the upcoming local body polls and assembly polls, are unacceptable. LJD strongly condemns such acts and declare support to Chief Minister,” said Shreyams Kumar.
