Musth period: Forest officials warn people not to provoke ‘Padayappa’ in Munnar

Munnar: The forest department has warned not to provoke wild elephant ‘Padayappa’ in Munnar. The forest department has advised people to exert caution since the elephant is going through Musth period.

In the past, Padayappa returns to the jungle during the time of musth. However, for the past two years, Padayappa has remained in the residential area.

Musth is a periodic condition in male elephants characterised by aggressive behaviour and accompanied by a large rise in reproductive hormones. Forest officials are always cautious of elephants’ behaviour during this time. That is why the officials have given instructions not to provoke Padayappa.

Nicknamed ‘Komban’ in Munnar, Padayappa usually does not cause any problems to the people. However, many tourists visiting Munnar try to provoke Padayappa by honking and flashing headlights.
